Château Maillet, a tiny, 1.5 hectare estate in Pomerol, has been owned by the Moze-Berthon family since 1820. Originally, the family released the Château Maillet as the second wine of their main property, Château Gouperie, though in 2015, they decided to offer the Maillet under its own label. Today, the property is run by Patrick Moze-Berthon and his son, Michael, who are the family's sixth and seventh generation. Vines (average age of 35 years) are grown in clay-limestone soils, with harvesting done manually. Vinification is done in new oak barrels and the wines are aged for 18 months.

The Château Maillet — a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc — pours a deep, opaque purple to the rim. The nose offers a melange of dark black fruits kissed with a touch of vanilla. On the palate, this wine is rich and flavorful, displaying waves of intense black fruits (plum, blackberry and currants) supported by silky tannins that lead to a seductive, velvety finish. Pair with hard cheeses, veal tenderloin or roast venison.

I loved the 2020 Château Maillet, a richer, concentrated, focused Pomerol with terrific density and depth. Black cherries, smoked darker currants, chocolate, and leafy tobacco are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with plenty of background oak and a great finish. It's brilliant juice, but it needs at least 4-6 years of bottle age.
