Fattoria Poggerino is one of Chianti Classico's most prestigious estates. Located in Radda in Chianti, the estate consists of 43 total hectares, of which 29 are certified organic vineyards planted mostly to Sangiovese. Poggerino’s vineyards are located at 400 to 500 meters, face south-southwest and are abundant with the rocky galestro soils for which Chianti is famous. The land used to belong to Prince Ginori Conti, a descendant of one of Florence’s oldest families. Floriana Ginori Conti inherited the winery from her father in the 1970s, and in 1980, with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, began making Chianti Classico with the Poggerino label. In 1999, she handed over the property to her two children, Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who had been managing it since 1988. All wines are made exclusively with estate fruit.
Poggerino's Chianti Classico is made from 100% Sangiovese fermented in concrete tanks, then transferred to 20 and 25 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and 4 and 5 hectoliter French oak tonneaux where it ages for 12 months before further aging of at least 8 months in bottle. Mid-ruby color with expressive aromas of sour cherry, blackberries, leather and dried herbs. On the palate, this gorgeous Chianti Classico is fresh and vibrant with fine persistent tannins that impeccably frame the concentrated fruit flavors that flow into a persistent and refined finish. An exemplary Chianti Classico to enjoy with a wild boar ragu.

The 2023 Chianti Classico is a very pretty wine. Dark red cherry, leather, lavender, spice and dried herbs all meld together in an open-knit, mid-weight wine that has so much to offer. Pliant and inviting, with tons of nuance, the Chianti Classico is an absolute delight in 2023. It was aged mostly cask, with some cement.
