Volker Eisele established his family estate in 1974 after becoming enchanted by the peaceful beauty of Napa Valley’s Chiles Valley District. The 400-acre property was originally part of the Rancho Catacula land grant given to Joseph Ballinger Chiles in 1843 by the last Mexican governor of California, Don Pío de Jesús Pico IV. Farmed organically since its inception, the Volker Eisele Family Estate is comprised of sixty acres of vines planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc in shaly, clay-loam soils. Chiles Valley is one of the cooler areas of Napa Valley, so these vineyards experience an exceptionally long growing season which leads to optimal ripeness. Volker always believed that “exceptional fruit produces exceptional wine” and his son Alexander and Alexander’s wife Catherine are carrying on that motto, with the family’s third generation, Simon and Tristan, already running through vineyards and tasting the delicious fruit right off the vine.
The Volker Eisele Cabernet Sauvignon pours a deep purplish red offering an abundance of dark berries and stone fruit aromas mixed with hints of pipe tobacco and pencil shavings. The medium- to full-bodied palate displays a welcoming freshness which ushers in lush flavors of just-picked blackberries, black cherries and ripe plum accented with a touch of espresso. These fruits are intertwined with bold, yet ultra-fine tannins which support this wine towards its beautifully long finish. Enjoy with a grilled New York strip smothered in caramelized onions and mushroom served with a potato and garlic purée.

Waxy and reductive at first, this wine opens slowly to reveal black olive, plum and a sinewy texture. It has balanced power on the midpalate alongside a mix of oaky char, dark chocolate and clove that finish in unison.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, powerful and authoritative, with plenty of dark fruit to play off the muscular tannins. Inky blue/purplish fruit, leather, smoke, graphite and scorched earth add attractive bassy undertones throughout. Brooding in personality and yet also very much mid-weight in feel, the 2016 has a lot to offer. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so.
