Weingut Aigner Sandgrube Grüner Veltliner 2024

Weingut Aigner’s tradition traces back to 1773, though up until the 1950s, the estate was run as a polyfarm with just a small plot dedicated to vine. At the time, Franz Aigner Jr. recognized how special the terroir was in Sandgrube and converted the property solely to vineyard, laying the foundation for the modern winery. Initially, grapes were grown and sold to the local cooperative until Franz decided to keep half to vinify himself to sell directly from the farm. In 1985, Franz’s son Wolfgang, the family’s ninth generation, took over management of the estate at the young age of 21, though he has done a remarkable job respecting the legacy and experiences of his father and grandfather. Today, Wolfgang sustainably farms sixteen hectares of vines planted on loess-covered soils of Danube gravel and prehistoric rock. Weingut Aigner produced exceptional representations of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, as well as small amounts of Chardonnay, Muskateller and Zweigelt (reds and rosés).

Aigner’s Sandgrube Grüner Veltliner displays an attractive light yellow with shimmering green and silver highlights. On the nose, mouthwatering aromas of citrus, orchard and tropical fruits tantalize the senses, accented with a dusting of white pepper and light spice. Medium-bodied and richly textured on the palate, this Grüner showcases juicy layers of green apple, melon, kiwi and grapefruit tinged with hints of orange blossom honey and sea-salt crusted, crushed stone. Exhibiting gorgeous length, this wine rides a wave of zesty acidity towards a delightfully elegant finish punctuated by an incredible freshness. Pair with seafood, spicy or creamy dishes… or you could try all three at once and enjoy this Grüner with Thai green curry with shrimp.
