Vini Lazzeretti — a humble ten-hectare estate nestled at the foot of the hill of Montalcino — is the dream project of Marco Lazzeretti. Marco was born into a winemaking family and on his 18th birthday, he was gifted the one-hectare vineyard his grandfather Pietro Bastiani planted in 1981. Marco expanded upon it over the following year (1998) with the goal of producing wines under his own name, which came to fruition in 2001. He was soon joined by his sister Lucia and together they now oversee all phases of production and cellar management. Vini Lazzeretti crafts limited production wines of exceptional quality and value — Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.

Marco Lazzeretti’s Brunello di Montalcino presents a mid-garnet red, billowing from the glass with lush berry, stone and dried fruits underlain with a touch of earth and rose petals. On the palate, this wine is classic Brunello… mouthwatering flavors of fresh-picked blackberries effortlessly blend with darker notes of macerated cherry and plum. Secondary hints of espresso-dusted licorice, dried figs and savory herbs complement these concentrated fruits. This beautiful Brunello possesses exquisite structure, composed of Sangiovese’s tell-tale, radiant acidity and firm, yet caressing tannins that will no doubt lovingly swaddle this wine towards perfection for the next 5-10 years. Marco’s masterful Brunello finishes long, displaying dazzling elegance and depth. I recommend decanting for at least thirty minutes.

Cherries and rose petals contrast the textured crispness of wild fennel, burnt sage and orange peel on the nose. Sweet cherries and bitter herbs with underbrush continue on the palate, above a foundation of densely packed, fine-grained tannins.
