Churchill's Crusted Porto

Churchill’s is a family-run port and Douro wine producer based in Vila Nova da Gaia and the Douro Valley. Established in 1981 by Johnny Graham when he was just 29 years old, Churchill’s crafts an impressive lineup of vintage, ruby and wood-aged ports, in addition to Douro wines from their Quinta da Gricha vineyard. Today, Johnny still manages the estate and makes the wine, with help from the next generation of his family. Churchill’s is the last independent British port house in Portugal.

Crusted Port is a younger, rare style of Port wine that is bottled unfiltered, leaving a sediment (crust) to form in the bottle with time. It is meant to emulate vintage port in body and texture, though with less aging and at lower price. Churchill’s crusted port offers a deep purplish ruby in the glass. Aromas and flavors of black cherry and mulberry dominate the rich palate. Subtle mineral notes balance the ripe fruit as it envelops this port’s fine tannic structure. The finish is clean and intense. Supremely enjoyable on its own, though this port can be paired with an assorted cheese plate (excellent with bleu!) or with dark chocolate pot de crème.
