Marine Layer Wines is the collaboration of wine visionary Baron Ziegler and winemaker Rob Fischer. Together, they have established a Sonoma Coast-focused winery with the goal of crafting elegant and approachable wines from grapes sourced for some of the best vineyards in the region. The team is guided by the practices of sustainable farming, use of heritage clones and hand-harvesting combined with an artisan approach to winemaking and an obsession for quality. The estate’s name, Marine Layer, refers to the thick blanket of fog that pours in from the Pacific along the Sonoma Coast. Marine Layer’s focus is to make authentic, cool-climate wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this challenging, yet rewarding region.

Marine Layer’s "Lyra” Pinot Noir is named for one of the oldest and brightest constellations found in the California summer sky, arriving as the vines awaken back to life and departing at harvest. The Lyra Pinot Noir sits a mid-ruby color, presenting a lush bouquet of raspberries and cherry accented with notes of violets and dried herbs. The intricate palate is packed with high-toned red fruits lashed with a vibrant acidity and supported by soft, well-integrated tannins. The wine ambles sensuously toward an elegant and uplifting finish that seemingly lasts for days. Enjoy with caramelized chanterelles and brie on toasted flatbread or black pepper-crusted tuna.

Floral perfume is expressive in the 2021 Pinot Noir Lyra, with cinnamon sticks, roses, and red cherry notes. Medium-bodied, it is ripe with red plum, wild herbs, and a bit of toasted oak spice on the finish. It is savory and dry, with fine tannins and a bit of crunchy texture from the partial use of whole clusters. It's drinking well now and will drink well over the next 6-8 years.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Lyra is a very pretty, exotic wine. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon, mint and blood orange lend notable complexity to this racy, flavorful appellation-level Pinot. Vineyard sites are Gaps Crown, Whistler, Dutton, Gravenstein and Jentoft. Drink it over the next handful of years.
