Château Moulinet — one of the oldest and largest properties in all of Pomerol — produces two wines: their eponymous first label and their second label, Clos Sainte Anne. The estate is comprised of eighteen hectares planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon on Pomerol’s famed crasse de fer (iron-rich clay soils) with an average vine age of 35 years. The estate has been run by the Moueix family since their acquisition of the property in 1971. Today, Nathalie Moueix oversees the operation with the help of technical director and oenologist Frédéric Redon, in addition to working closely with Derononcourt Consultants, one of the world’s leading viticultural consulting firms. Since 2018, The estate is committed to sustainability having been certified HVE Level 3 and ISO 14001 since 2018 and are experimenting with four organically-farmed hectares leaning towards potential conversion and certification.
The 2020 Clos Sainte Pomerol is composed of 100% Merlot sourced from the estate's vineyards (average age of 35-40 years) where the crasse de fer is located deeper in the soils, allowing the wine to drink softer and more fruit-forward. This Pomerol is vinified, then aged for 12-18 months in stainless steel which provides for the retention of dazzling fruit purity. Dark fruits dominate the nose, with secondary aromas of violets, sweet tobacco and forest floor contributing to an intoxicating bouquet. The medium- to full-bodied palate is bold and dense. Flavors of plum, blackberry and blackcurrant cascade across the tongue, interweaved with hints of bittersweet chocolate and umami. This wine is impeccably balanced with its firm tannic structure enveloped by fresh fruit flavor. The Clos Sainte Anne is round and voluminous reaching every corner of the palate, coating every inch with supreme texture and concentration of flavor. The elegant finish is displays beautiful length and finesse.
