Ptujska Klet Haložan White 2024

Ptujska Klet is the oldest and largest winery in Slovenia. Its cellars — which create an intricate labyrinth beneath the entire city of Ptuj — date to 1239 and house the city’s famous wine archive which possesses all vintages since 1946. During the 19th century, the cellar expanded with many bourgeois families adding their own to the existing underground structure. The Ornig family played a large role in advancing both the winery and the city’s wine industry, renovating the vineyards and cellar and introducing wine tourism to Ptuj. Slovenian independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 slowed development of the winery and Ptuj’s wine trade, though it also helped to usher in modern international winemaking ideas and techniques helping to raise Ptujska Klet to the level of greatness it enjoys today. The winery was taken over by Perutnina Ptuj in 2002 and was renamed Ptujska Klet along with undergoing another renovation. In 2021, Pullus Wines, a group of executives from Perutnina Ptuj, purchased a majority stake in the winery and are now conservators of Ptujska Klet. Today, the estate is comprised of over 300 hectares of vineyards grown in clayey-gravel and marl soils. The vines are planted on steeply-terraced slopes on both banks of the Drava river. Winemaker Bojan Kobal crafts exceptional varietal and blended wines from Welshriesling, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Yellow Muscat, Traminer, Furmint, Pinot Blanc, and Rizvanec for their whites and Pinot Noir, Blaufrankisch and Žametovka for their reds.

Ptujska Klet’s Haložan White is a delicious blend of Welschriesling, Riesling, Chardonnay, Furmint and Pinot Blanc. Aromas of citrus-kissed stone and orchard fruits jump from the glass accented with hints of white flowers, chamomile tea and sea spray. The palate is light and fresh, offering crisp flavors of white peach, pear and lemon zest that are highlighted with a vibrant acidity and infused with a delightful saline minerality. This wonderful white finishes long with notes of salted citrus.
