Founded in 1900, Cascina Garitina is a family-owned and operated farm named for founder Margherita Morino. The estate is currently run by Margherita’s great-grandson and fourth-generation winemaker Gianluca Morino. Gianluca, a Barbera specialist, organically farms his vineyards which are planted predominantly to Barbera (85%) with the remainder to Brachetto, Dolcetto, Pinot Nero, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Gianluca pushes the limits of conventional winemaking while crafting high-quality, low-intervention wines that are true to their varietal and terroir.
Cascina Garitina’s Garrita Barbera d’Asti pours a deep, inky purple, bursting from the glass with ripe cherry and blackberry preserves marked by oak spice and sweet tobacco. The medium-bodied palate showcases dark berry fruits complemented by a lively acidity and soft, seductive tannins. The wine finishes with length and elegance. Serve with sausage-stuffed cannelloni, thinly-sliced flank steak or sage and thyme-rubbed lamb chops.
