Château Haut Bellegarde, situated approximately 20 km north-east of Bordeaux, was acquired by Guillaume Bergeon in 2018. The property had fallen on hard times and Guillaume saw an opportunity to develop a more contemporary image for the Château while preserving and respecting the traditional values and know-how that had been at the estate’s core for generations. The Château, located in Villegouge overlooking the Dordogne river, is comprised of a magnificent 19th century residence faithfully restored by Guillaume. The 52 hectares of vineyards — HVE certified in 2020 — are composed of rich clay and clay-limestones soils and planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sémillon. Currently, Hubert de Boüard, co-owner of Château Angélus, acts as consulting oenologist.
This Bordeaux Supèrieur from Haut Bellegarde, a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, jumps out of the glass with captivating aromatics. The nose is full of vibrant cherry and blueberry aromas — tinged with notes of cocoa powder and spice — and highlighted by an uplifting freshness provided by partial stem inclusion during fermentation. The medium- to full-bodied palate is deep and enveloping, offering concentrated, dark berry fruit supported by delicate, silky tannins and a beautiful acidity that modestly courses through the wine. The lengthy finish displays purity, lushness and volume. Enjoy with pan-seared veal chops, roast beef or a variety of game.
