Domaine de Rancy — nestled in the Agly Valley just north of the Pyrénées — was founded in the 1920’s. In 1970, the estate was acquired by Marcel Verdaguer, who was joined by his son Jean-Hubert four years later. Jean-Hubert and his wife Brigitte took over the property in 1989 and now oversee the 50+ year old vines planted on clay-limestone and brown schist soils. While practicing organic for decades, the estate’s first certified organic vintage was 2011. Domaine de Rancy is one of only a handful of quality wineries still producing exceptional Rivesaltes in the old Ambré style, a unique fortified wine. Today, the couple manage an extraordinary library of wines, some dating back to the 1940’s.
The 1984 vintages pours a dark golden brown in the glass presenting an intriguing nose of black fruits, fresh ground coffee and cocoa powder. The palate is full and textured but displays incredible balance between the rich flavors of dates, dried figs and butterscotch and the delicate and fresh acidity that perfectly counters this wine's unctuousness. Enjoy with roasted mixed nuts, olives and hard cheeses or a variety of other hors d'oeuvres, as well as being a perfect dessert wine.

The 1984 is classic Rivesaltes, boasting a masculine, powerful bouquet of black fruits, figs, chocolate, cheese rind, and roasted coffee beans. Made from 100% Macabeu, it's full-bodied, with a thick, unctuous texture, rock-solid overall balance, and a clean, bright finish that balances out its sweetness beautifully. Drink it just about any time over the coming 3-4 decades.
