Cantina Massara can trace its inception back to 1850, when Giovan Battista Burlotto established his estate in the heart of Verduno, the northernmost commune in Barolo. The property sits among the village’s hilltops offering breathtaking views of the Langhe and beyond. Though the family produced its first vintage in 1961, Massara didn’t bottle under its own label until 2013 under the leadership of fifth-generation winemaker Gian Carlo Burlotto. Today, Gian Carlo crafts world-class wines with help from his son Gianluca and daughter Claudia. The family sustainably farms their vineyards, planted predominantly to Nebbiolo with smaller quantities of Dolcetto, Barbera, Pelaverga and Favorita in sandy, clay-limestone soils. Cantina Massara’s wines embody the unique characteristics of Verduno helping Massara become synonymous with the village.
Cantina Massara’s Barolo Verduno pours a deep garnet red tinged with ruby offering a captivating nose of red cherries and raspberry dusted with spice and accented with notes of dried violets and truffle. The palate is full and powerful, yet displays extraordinary elegance and finesse. Extremely well-balanced, this Barolo possesses a seamless union of juicy red fruits, clove and earthy flavors swaddled by soft, silky tannins. The lengthy finish is refined and complex. Absolutely stunning tonight or any night over the next 10-15 years.
