Maison Tardieu-Laurent was founded in 1996 by Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, though for many years the business has been the exclusive domaine of the Tardieu family. Today, it is run by Michel, his son, Bastien, and daughter, Camille. When Michel started the business, he would ask the growers he worked with two questions: which producers in the same appellation wines they liked to drink, and if they had some friends or producers with well-located old vines who might be interested to work with him. The result is an extensive network of “partner vignerons” — farmers with whom the family have long-standing relationships, almost all of whom have enviable holdings of old vines in the northern and southern Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. Today, this word of mouth and handshake model is still how the family conducts their business.
Maison Tardieu-Laurent's stunning Saint-Joseph blanc — an 85/15 blend of Marsanne and Roussanne — is sourced from vines that average 35-40 years of age. This Saint-Joseph explodes out of the glass with a dazzling combination of tropical and orchard fruits accented with pan-toasted almond, vanilla and white flowers. Ripe flavors of Bosc pear and Mirabelle plum coalesce with notes of rich orange marmalade, lemon curd and a light hint of marzipan. The mid-palate displays a creamy mouthfeel that is balanced by a vibrant acidity and a soft mineral undertone which drives you toward your next sip. The finish is seemingly endless with a kiss of salted citrus. Do not hesitate to make this your Thanksgiving wine, you will not be disappointed! Other excellent pairings include pan-seared foie gras with pickled ramps and apricots, broiled Dover sole drizzled with a lemon beurre blanc or baked brie with mango chutney.
