Weingut Bürgerspital, a founding member of the VDP, is an estate with more than seven centuries of winemaking history and tradition. The Franken estate is located in Würzburg and is comprised of over 120 hectares of vines: Silvaner, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Scheurebe, Muskateller and Rieslaner for the whites and Domina, Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch for the reds. Today, the estate is helmed by Estate Director Robert Haller who boasts that Bürgerspital’s most valuable heritage is their unique and unequalled portfolio of vineyard sites. For nearly 300 years, Bürgerspital has bottled their best wines in the local historic and traditional round-bellied bottle, the Bockbeutel. Their line of Gutsweine is bottled in the Rhine flute-shaped bottles.
Bürgerspital’s Silvaner pours a light lemon yellow in the glass offering a dazzling bouquet of orchard and stone fruits accented with hints of jasmine and lime. The medium-bodied palate showcases flavors of yellow peach, apricots and Asian pears complemented by notes of lime zest and a slight herbaceousness. The wine is well-balanced with the fruit countered with vibrant acidity and a shelly-limestone minerality. This Silvaner will pair beautifully with broiled salmon, grilled sausages with sauerkraut or sautéed pork tenderloin with mushrooms.
