Domaine des Orgnes — a third-generation, winemaking estate situated halfway between Avignon and Nîmes — was founded in 1953 by Marsielle native Jean de Gérin-Ricard. In pursuing a degree in agricultural engineering, Jean became fascinated by the teachings of Olivier de Serres, considered the father of modern agriculture. His passion directed the purchase of Mas de Orgnes, this centuries-old estate which was originally planted to vine by the Romans. Jean immediately set to resurrecting the property’s vineyards and soon, his son Joseph joined him in this endeavor. Eventually, Joseph built a modern winery and devoted himself to becoming an artisanal winemaker. Today, Joseph’s sons Emmanuel and Michel run the estate, meticulously farming the property’s 80 hectares in the Côtes du Rhône and Coteaux du Pont du Gard appellations.
Domaine des Orgnes’ Coteaux du Pont du Gard rouge is a 70/30 blend of Syrah and Grenache sourced from 20-year-old vines. Dark, inky purple in the glass, this Rhône red presents a lovely bouquet of red and black berry fruits tinged with hints of licorice and earth. The palate is loaded with mixed berry compote flavors (blueberry, blackberry and cherry) complemented with a fresh earthiness and smooth, sumptuous tannins. This rouge finishes long and supple. Enjoy with Thai beef salad, honey-glazed, roasted duck or Moroccan-spiced pork chops.
