Nino Costa was founded by the Costa family in 1851. The estate consists of 7 hectares which lie on a hilltop overlooking the village of Montá in the heart of Roero in Piedmont. Winemaker Alessandro Costa grows Arneis, Nebbiolo, Favorita and Brachetto in their yellow-ochre sandy soils and his parents, Nino and Gemma, run the Azienda. The vineyards are dotted along the wooded hillsides of the region, though all of them are within 1 mile of the winery. All grapes are grown with organic methods, using natural fertilizers and zero herbicides.
Nino Costa's Barbera d'Alba is from the Bardot vineyard, one of Montà's highest altitude vineyards, at around 300 meters, grown in sandy soils with high clay-limestone content. All grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in tank for 12 months to retain the amazing fruit quality of the wine. In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with garnet highlights. The nose is textbook Barbera; when you inhale, you can't help but receive a jolt of energy from the purity of cherry, plum, raspberry and fresh earth aromas. On the palate, the Bardot Barbera mirrors the energy on the nose with an invigorating concentration of juicy fruit flavors, vibrant acidity and an almost imperceptible touch of fine-grained tannins. Sometimes, simplicity is best, and Alessandro has created a stunning wine that delivers all you want in a daily drinker: fruit purity, energy and drinkability. Bravo!
