The prestigious Château Haut-Brion distinguishes itself as being the oldest of the five First Growths with written records of the estate dating back to 1521. It is also the only non-Left Bank First Growth, residing in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and consisting of 55+ hectares of sustainably-farmed vineyards. These plots are planted predominantly to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon — along with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris — in soils of quartz gravel over subsoils of clay, limestone and shelly sand. Today, the château is run by Prince Robert of Luxembourg, who is the fourth generation to manage the property since his great-grandfather Clarence Dillon purchased Haut-Brion in 1935. Château Haut-Brion possesses dual environmental certification in both HVE (2018) and ISO 14001 (2019). The wines of Haut-Brion are full of aromatic complexity, richness and generosity (they are the only First Growth whose blend is crafted mainly from Merlot) with exquisite structure lending to extensive aging potential.

The solid and serious structure of this wine is reflected in the wood aromas and spice from wood aging. It is dense, packed with tannins at the core, and its concentration gives a dry character to the wine. Ready to drink from 2028.

The 2021 Haut-Brion is an excellent wine. Despite its mid-weight structure, the 2021 possesses notable dynamic energy and layers of complexity that build with time in the glass. Scorched earth, leather, tobacco, incense, licorice and dried herbs are some of the many notes that open with aeration. The 2021 is a quiet, understated Haut-Brion, but all its signatures are present. Today, the it is not quite as showy as it was en primeur, but it is a fine effort nonetheless.
