Château Laurou Fronton Les Complices 2020
After decades spent in computer engineering, Guy Salmona took over Château Laurou in 1997 and immediately began farming the 45+ hectares organically. Guy took an intensive course of study in viticulture and vinification in Burgundy, before seeing the property as a “sleeping beauty.” He began making investments and renovations as soon as the ink was dry. Organic certification was finally achieved in 2013. Guy tends to vines of Negrette, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay and Fer Servadou on soils of Boublènes Blanches (sandy white stones). Guy states that Château Laurou “makes wines that they like,” but more than that, the estate makes wines that are “true wines of Fronton,” those which exhibit the unique characteristics of each varietal. No oak is used during fermentation or aging.
Les Complices, which means “partners in crime,” speaks of the perfect relationship exhibited by the 60% Negrette and 40% Syrah that makes up this beautiful blend. The nose showcases incredible aromas of ripe red and black berry and stone fruits incorporated with layers of peony and violet forming an intoxicating bouquet. The palate is smooth and elegant, displaying waves of raspberry and blackberry and red cherry and plum intertwining with hints of espresso and bittersweet chocolate. These flavors are supported by silky, mouthcoating tannins that carry the wine to a beautiful, expressive finish. Pair with grilled or roasted meats… venison tenderloin, lamb chops, beef short ribs, whatever you like, this wine will sing.
