Markogianni Winery, located between the foothills of Mount Lapitha and the Alpheus river, was founded by brothers George, Konstantinos and Dionysios Christopoulous in 1982. Today, second-generation winemakers Antonia and Yiannis Christopoulos organically farm the family estate with the goal of highlighting the indigenous grape varietals of the Olympia wine region. The region possesses a unique and rare microclimate where a permanent breeze helps contribute to the proper ripening of the grapes. Vines are grown in sandy-clay and clay-loam soils: for the whites, Assyrtiko, Roditis Alepou, and Asproudes; for the reds and rosés, Kolliniatiko, Vertzami, Mandilaria, Mavrodaphne, and Refosco.
Markogianni’s Antilalos Refosco pours a brooding deep violet color offering seductive aromas of wild berries and stone fruits marked with notes of warm spice. The full-bodied palate is packed with juicy flavors of cherry, plum and raspberries kissed with exotic spice and bitter chocolate. Extremely well-balanced, this Refosco showcases a brilliant acidity and soft tannic structure that intertwine seamlessly. The finish is long and fruit-filled. Enjoy with cured meats, roasted game fowl or braised short ribs over creamy polenta.
