Weingut Hans Wirsching is one of the most traditional and renowned estates in Franconia. Its history dates back to 1630 and for several centuries, the Wirsching family flourished in the business of agriculture and winemaking until the late 19th century. Then phylloxera struck. In 1918, a young Hans Wirsching returned from WWI and put all his energy into the restoration of the property. He restarted the winery and painstakingly replanted the vineyards with American rootstock. Fast forward to today, Andrea Wirsching —the family's 14th generation — manages the estate, overseeing ninety hectares of vines in and around the medieval town of Ipofen. The soils in this part of Franconia consist largely of “Keuper” or Jurassic Clay, a sediment stone from 220 million years ago, that is interspersed with layer of gypsum. The estate specializes in dry, white wines and is one of the top producers of Silvaner and Scheurebe in Germany.
