Château Ferrand has been owned and managed by the Gasparoux family since wine merchant Fernand Gasparoux purchased the 3.5 hectare property in 1934. Fernand’s son Henry took over management of the estate in 1981, while maintaining his role as professor of science at the University of Bordeaux. It was during Henry’s tenure that Château Ferrand underwent its most striking and substantive changes, including renovations in the vineyards and cellar, as well as joining the wine tourism movement. Currently in his mid-eighties, Henry, who still enthusiastically oversees the vineyards, is now assisted by his sons Jean-Pascal and Philippe and his grandson Matthieu. Over the years, the estate has grown to nearly twelve hectares of sustainably and organically farmed vineyards, certified in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
Château Ferrand’s 2020 vintage pours a beautiful, intense ruby red with aromas of dark red fruit exploding out of the glass flowing into hints of violets, sandalwood and crushed oyster shells. This pristine Pomerol is fresh and energetic on the attack showcasing an enticing acidity. The palate reveals a deep core of red stone fruits — cherry and Santa Rosa plum — intertwined with notes of herbs, bittersweet chocolate and a captivating umami quality. Silky, velvety tannins ferry those ripe, voluptuous fruits towards a long, elegant finish.

This shows aromas of plums and blueberries with milk chocolate, hazelnuts and crushed violets. Some crushed stones, too. Full-bodied with firm tannins that continue to build up throughout the palate. Deep core of ripe black and blue fruit. Chewy and tight, this needs some time to settle together. Lingering finish with hints of blue flowers. Try after 2025.

Bold black-fruit aromas, rich tannins and balanced black-plum flavors come together in this solid, firm and concentrated wine. It has fine layers of fruit and acidity, supported by tannins. Drink from 2027.
