Azienda Agricola La Màgia was founded in the early 1970s by Harald Schwarz, who came from Alto Adige after becoming enamored with Montalcino's stunning beauty. In 2011, Harald handed the reins over to his son Fabian, who studied at the Istituto Agrario San Michele all’Adige, Italy's most prestigious oeneological college. The property is situated on an old paved Roman road dating back to the Etruscan era. While oft-confused as a translation for "the magic," La Màgia's name is a derivation of ‘magione’ a Tuscan rendition of the French ‘maison,' though anyone looking down the valley directly below their vineyard is likely to experience the sheer magic of this hallowed place. Such a magnificent and generous terroir deserves to be cared for and protected with total passion and respect.
The property of La Màgia sits on 52 hectares of stony, clayey-calcareous soils which help retain moisture and nutrients even during prolonged periods of drought. Though, their crowning glory is a 40-year-old parcel — a single 15-hectare block nestled in the center of their sloped vineyards ̶ planted to Sangiovese and registered exclusively to Brunello. These old vines are low-yield, producing small, concentrated berries that lead to wines with supreme intensity of flavor. Over the years, the Schwarz family has strived to show the utmost respect for the integrity of the terroir and dedicated themselves to making the estate as sustainable as possible, starting with solar power in the late 80's, to a complete photo-voltaic system in 2008 that has made the cellar fully self-sufficient in energy. Combining this maximum use of advanced technology with the minimum interference in the natural process of vinification, Fabian aims to achieve a product of the very highest quality with its own unique identity. This commitment and approach has helped La Màgia earn biodynamic certification.
La Màgia's Rosso di Montalcino — 100% Sangiovese — pours a deep, ruby red with explosive aromatics of spiced red fruits leaping out of the glass. This Rosso is soft, medium-bodied and packed with vibrant, ripe cherry and red currant flavors. This wine is elegantly structured displaying bright acidity and well-integrated tannins leading to a finish that is long and textured. Perfect with any tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled sausages or mushroom risotto.
