Since 1890, five generations of the Rottensteiner family have cultivated their vineyards in the St. Magdalener subzone in Südturol. Today, Thomas Rottensteiner, the fifth-generation winemaker, continues to practice the traditional methods of his forefathers to craft stunning alpine wines under Weingut Obermoser. Over the years, through much trial and error, the family ended up focusing on three varietals: Sauvignon Blanc and two local red grapes, Lagrein and Schiava. The vines are grown on pergolas, with many of their Schiave vines over 50 years old. Obermoser is one of only twenty-two producers who make Schiava from the St. Magdalener DOC subzine in Südtirol.
Obermoser's St. Magdalener is 95% Schiava and 5% Lagrein aged for one year in large Slavonian oak casks. In the glass, the wine shows a lovely light ruby color with shades of garnet. Intoxicating aromas of sour cherries, red berries and violets plume from the glass. On the palate, the Obermoser Schiava is floral, elegant and complex with soft, silky tannins and a delicate acidity to match its light body. But don't be fooled: there is excellent concentration of flavor, both in the mouth and on the finish, to pique the interest of any wine lover. Enjoy with speck or roasted game.
