Azienda Agricola Chiappini is located in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany. Established in the 1950’s, the estate began as a polyculture farm by owner Giovanni Chiappini’s parents, who moved to the Bolgheri region from Marche. Today, Giovanni organically cultivates fifteen hectares of vines planted to Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino in alluvial calcareous soils. With the help of his two daughters, Martina and Lisa, Giovanni crafts expressive wines that speak to the unique and valuable terroir of the Bolgheri.

The 2021 Felciaino is named for the red ferns of the region and is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that spent one year in used barrique, 2-, 3-, and 4-year barrels. Although it qualifies as a Bolgheri Superiore, Chiappini essentially declassifies it to reserve that designation for their top bottling. It pours a rich but transparent red and reveals a balanced but oak-influenced perfume, with notes of cedar, sweet baking spices, red plum, black raspberry, turned soil, and fennel. Medium-bodied, it's ripe but light on its feet, with soft, well-integrated tannins and a clean finish. Elegant and charming to drink, it will likely benefit from another year in bottle to soften its oak presence and will do well over the next 6-8 years. I love this for its versatility and freshness.
