Dunites is a small wine company named after a group of metropolitan refugees (a collection of free thinkers, artists, nudists and poets known as Dunites) from the 1930's who settled on the Oceano dunes of San Luis Obispo County, living as their own independent community. The husband-and-wife team of Tyler and Rachel Eck aim to produce transparent wines that respect the coastal influence of vineyard sites on the SLO coast. By using whole cluster vinification, minimal amounts of sulfur, native yeast fermentation, gentle extraction methods, lees aging, neutral oak maturation and bottling without fining or filtration, Dunites are making some of the most remarkable wines in all California.
Dunites' Albariño is made from 100% Albariño, some of which is fermented whole-cluster, while the rest is crushed by foot. No SO2 is added, and the wine is fermented in neutral French oak barrels and puncheon with native yeasts and native malolactic conversion. The wine is aged for 8 months on the lees and bottled without fining or filtration and minimal SO2 added prior to bottling. Entrancing on the nose, this Albariño displays a beautiful combination of stone, tropical and citrus fruits marked with a hint of white flowers. The palate is fresh and lively with a vibrant acidity that highlights a brilliant core of honeyed melon, white peach and apricot. There is a subtle saline minerality that guides this wine to long, delightful finish. Enjoy with grilled fish.
