In 2001, Vincent Roussely became the fourth generation of his family to own the Clos Roussely, a castle in the village of Angé sur Cher in the Loire Valley, that his great-grandfather bought and turned into a winemaking facility in 1917. When he took over, Vincent resumed full control of the vineyards and winemaking space (his grandfather and father had rented out the vineyards and cellar to build a négociant wine company). The estate is located in the best areas of the Touraine and Touraine-Chenonceaux appellations, covering 8 hectares of certified organic vineyards on soils of clay and tuffeau limestone with large flint deposits. Vincent does not use herbicides, pesticides or chemicals and prides himself on protecting plant and animal diversity within the local ecosystem.
The Clos Roussely Canaille is made from 100% Gamay from 25-50 year old, hand-harvested grapes fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Mid-ruby color with purple highlights, the wine emits lovely aromas of raspberries, ripe cherries, wet earth and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity to complement the lovely depth of juicy fruit flavors that flow into a lively and invigorating finish with mineral and spice notes. Enjoy with a salt and pepper grilled hangar steak served with chimichurri and fried potatoes.
