Francesco Versio crafts classic and brilliant Barbaresco from two miniscule, sought-after crus: San Cristoforo (.45 hectare) and Currà (.3 hectare), both with southwestern exposure overlooking Barbaresco. Francesco graduated from the Winemaking School in Alba in 2005 and completed his viticulture and winemaking studies at the University of Turin in 2009. He gained incredible winemaking experience working under Bruno Giacosa and Luigi Oddero before returning home to make his own wine from his grandfather’s tiny plots in 2012. More recently, he added two new plots: one in the Starderi MGA, the other in the Albesani MGA, all within the Neive Commune. Along with his Barbaresco, Francesco makes Dogliani Dolcetto, Barbera d’Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo.
Versio’s Barbaresco is crafted from Nebbiolo vines of up to 55 years of age. Brickish red with garnet/orange reflections, this wine is dazzlingly aromatic displaying a beautiful mix of brambly, forest fruits mixed with notes of violets and orange zest. The palate is elegant and refined showcasing ripe raspberry and cherry flavors complemented with notes of earth and spice. This Barbaresco possesses tremendous structure: vibrant, yet delicate acidity coupled with savory, fine-grained tannins lead to a finish with exquisite length. The perfect foil for braised or roasted meats. Enjoy with rabbit stew or pork shanks with roasted root vegetables.

This is a special Barbaresco with aromas of wild cherries and preserved raspberries rising from the glass. Savory spice, including cardamom, blood orange and dried rose creates an exotic and high-toned aromatic profile. The well-structured palate is generous with vibrant red fruits with subtle savory and earth elements in the background, just waiting for the right time to shine. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2020 Barbaresco is a powerful, deep wine. There's plenty of textural depth, but I don't see quite the energy or delineation of the best years. Sweet dark plum, spice, leather and tobacco open nicely in this mid-weight, relatively approachable young Barbaresco.
