Pasji rep is one of the oldest vineyard areas (sub-region) in the Vipava Valley region of southwestern Slovenia. Pasji Rep, which means dog's tail because of the valley’s unique shape and the stream that runs through it, has been a vineyard site dating back to 1476. The Premrn family — fourth-generation winemakers — operate the Pasji Rep Winery, owning four vineyards comprising seven of the remaining ten hectares of active vineyards in the region. Today, the estate is led by Samo Premrn, who organically and biodynamically farms these seven hectares planted to Zelen, Malvasia Istriana, Rebula, Riesling Italico and Pinot Noir. Samo practices minimal intervention winemaking, conducting natural fermentation with native yeasts with the goal of making wines of character that exhibit freshness, elegance and precision.
The region's microclimate allows for some remarkably elegant red wines and many of Samo Premrn's peers believe his Pinot Noir is one of the best in the region. A beautiful bright ruby in the glass, this Pinot Noir offers a elegant nose of spiced dark red and black berry fruit aromas accented with notes of dried herbs. The palate is fresh and vibrant displaying flavors of black raspberry, cherry and currant mixed with notes of cracked cloves and sage. This wine possesses impressive structure: a balance of delicate acidity, chalky minerality and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, clean and refreshing. Enjoy with pan-seared duck breast, sesame-crusted tuna or oyster mushroom risotto.
