Azienda Agricola 499 was founded in 2012 by friends Mario Andrion and Gabriele Saffirio with the purpose of creating an artisanal winegrowing and -making estate focused on the regional varietals of Piedmont. Mario, who studied viticulture and enology, is currently the winemaker at Castello di Verduno (Barolo/Barbaresco) and Gabriele was born into a winemaking family and grew up in the vineyard. Together, their combined expertise helped establish the tenets of their new project: sustainable farming, minimal intervention and making wines that speak to their origin. The duo farms six hectares of vines rooted in sandy, chalky soils on steep, terraced hillsides, planted to Moscato, Freisa, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. 499 refers to the altitude (in meters) of the estate's vineyards.
Azienda Agricola 499's Sorì del Mattino Nebbiolo sit a gorgeous mid-ruby red color in the glass. A few swirls release soaring aromatics of dark fruit with a floral infusion. The palate is awash with raspberry and just underripe cherry flavors. Each sip is packed with these fresh, juicy fruits, but is extremely well-balanced with medium tannins that guide this wine to a lovely finish. This is an incredibly drinkable Nebbiolo that will pair nicely with a myriad of dishes.
