Domaine Changarnier — established in 1720 — is located in Monthelie. Behind several centuries of winegrowing tradition, the estate has been run by brothers, Claude and Antoine Changarnier since 2004. Together, they organically farm (since 2019) 5.5 hectares of vines planted in soils of clay-limestone, clay-loam and marl-limestone. Harvests are completed manually, grapes are sorted by hand and wines are vinified with minimal intervention. Aging takes place in barrel, 15-20% new, for 12 months, then bottled with little filtration.
Changarnier’s Monthelie Premier Cru is crafted from 45+ year old vines grown in clay-limestone soils. Mid-ruby in color, this Monthelie presents dazzling aromas of red and black currants, strawberries and cherries accented with a hint of floral spice. The light- to medium-bodied palate is elegant and sensuous, with a lovely core of red fruits enveloped around a filigree acidity and ultra-fine tannins. The finish is long, laced with notes of baking spice, fine herbs and a touch of umami. A wonderful pairing for wild mushroom risotto, veal marsala or braised chicken thighs with roasted carrots and turnips.
