Brand Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Origin France, Bordeaux, Pessac-Léognan
Alcohol/vol 13.5%

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Graves Grand Cru Classé in the Pessac-Léognan appellation within Bordeaux. The name of the estate comes from its original owners, the Du Bosq family, who in 1365 planted the vines on a gravelly plateau known as a “Lafitte”, and from George Smith, a Scotsman who owned the property in the 18th century. Further down the line, Daniel and Florence Cathiard acquired the estate in 1990, investing considerable time, money and effort into upgrading the vineyards and the winery and ― rare for a Bordeaux Château ― introducing a barrel maker on-site, which allows them to make over 70% of their oak barrels! Today, Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the leading producers of organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking, encouraging biodiversity as well as maintaining its own nursery to propagate their vines.

Les Hauts de Smith is the estate's second wine, though it receives just as much attention and care as its older sibling. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine pours a deep, ruby red with an expressive nose of dark red and black fruits — black raspberry, blackberry and currant — with hints of chocolate and spice. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying beautiful dark fruit flavors kissed with a touch of graphite. This wine is well-structured and elegant with delicate tannins and a finish that is smooth and supple. Les Hauts de Smith Rouge paired with an expertly grilled rib-eye is an obvious winner, but that is just the tip of the sword. A range of dishes can be thoroughly enjoy with this versatile Bordeaux: Try pork chops with homemade mashed potatoes, chicken Marsala or pan-seared duck breast with scallion pancakes.

A wine dominated by Merlot, this is generous, full and rich. Tannins are already integrating with the blackberry fruits and acidity to give a wine that has weight and will age over the medium term. Drink from 2021.

Lively blackberry and black currant fruit is carried by bramble and tar notes. Shows a licorice snap accent on the finish. Good energy. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027. 8,333 cases made.
