The Meyer family has lived in Rhodt, a village in the Pfalz region of Germany, since the Middle Ages. However, it wasn't until 1950 that Karl Hermann Meyer founded the family winery when he first began bottling his own wine. Today, Stefan Meyer is the third generation to run this 8 hectare estate. Stefan fully respects and continues what he calls the "powerful tradition" his father and grandfather created in the winery, while also embracing innovation and modernization. The Meyer vineyards are located in Rhodt unter Reitburg, a village situated next to the Palatinate Forest. All work in the vineyard is organic, and all Stefan's wines are spontaneously fermented for maximum complexity.
The name, Ein Liter Rhodt, is a play on the fact that the name of Stefan's hometown (Rhodt) is pronounced like rot, the German for red, (both rhyme with boat.) This juicy, easy drinking wine is bottled in liter size, which is a good thing because a 750 mL bottle would be too small! The Ein Liter Rhodt is the ideal wine to bring to a lunch in the park or a party or enjoy on a beautiful day. Made from a blend of equal parts Portugieser, Saint Laurent and Dornfelder, this wine is full of bright red fruit, soft tannins and a refreshing acidity. The simplicity of this wine is its genius: it is actually very difficult to achieve the perfect level of ripeness in these grapes, and to then make a wine that is clean, precise and harmonious. Enjoy lightly chilled while grilling bratwursts or with wiener schnitzel and spaetzle. This is also a red wine that is especially friendly with spicy foods!
