Pikasi is the passion project of Matic Rodica, a young winemaker from Istria, who also has close family ties to the Vipava Valley. This wine region is located on the western side of Slovenia bordering the Italian wine appellations of Friuil and Collio. It is in the Vipava Valley that Matic works with close friend and vine grower, Petr Stegovic, sourcing sustainably-farmed, indigenous grapes to create a lineup of naturally-fermented varietal wines – Pinela, Zelen, Rebula, Barbera and Barbera Rose. Matic is also a professional ballroom dancer and all of the Pikasi labels are adorned with art inspired by his own dance photos. Matic's Pikasi wines are made in a fresh and approachable style and offer a pure and balanced expression of each grape varietal.
Pikasi's 100% Zelen is grown in vineyards of mineral-rich marl just north of Trieste, in Brje, Vipava Valley. The vineyards — which are farmed organically — are located on steep hills that benefit from a mix of climates: the continental climate of the Alps and the Mediterranean influence from the Adriatic. Zelen is a rare local variety from Vipava Valley, with only 80 hectars cultivated currently. The wine has elegant aromas of white flowers and lemon, and the palate offers salty and mineral qualities of a coastal wine and lively acidity. Pair it with a shrimp cocktail, oysters, or any other shellfish, grilled white fish or squid with lemon, parsley and olive oil.
