Cru La Maqueline is a 60 hectare estate — of which thirty are planted to vines — located just outside of Margaux on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary. The term "Cru" is interchangeable with Château, and has traditionally been used to distinguish La Maqueline and their wines from the surrounding estates. In addition to making Bordeaux wine, the estate raises and trains champion quarter horses. Throughout the property are barns, stables and cowboy paraphernalia resembling the Old West in the United States, which is why the symbol of the estate is a grape leaf and a horse head.
The Cru La Maqueline is a blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in sandy-clay soils. Though there are barns and plenty of horses on the property, I can assure you that none of those flavors are in the wine! This is a clean and utterly delicious Bordeaux, resplendent with enchanting aromas of damson plum preserves, blackberry, cassis, spice and coffee. The tannins are smooth and refined, balanced by moderate acidity with a generous body and mouthfeel. There is a delightfully spicy earthiness to this wine that adds an intriguing complexity to the dark fruits on the mid-palate and finish. Cru La Maqueline is incredibly versatile on the table: the wine is equally at home with a plate of assorted cheeses and cured meats on a picnic as it is with a roasted vegetable medley of zucchinis, potatoes, tomatoes, onions and celery, bell peppers stuffed with farro and smoked gouda, and, of course, the Corkscrew's favorite: Burgers and Bordeaux!
