Château Duhart-Milon is the only château in Pauillac ranked as a 4th Growth in the 1855 Classification. In the early 18th century the wines of Milon served as the second wine for its already illustrious neighbor: Château Lafite. During the second half of the 19th and first part of the 20th centuries, Duhart-Milon was one of the largest estates in Pauillac, consisting of 50 hectares of vines. After the 1930's, the estate was sold, and in a period of 25 years had five different owners, until the Rothschild family purchased the property in 1962. Since that time, the family has undertaken a massive overhaul of the vineyards and the cellar, restoring Duhart-Milon as one of the best estates in Pauillac.

The vineyard of Château Duhart-Milon consist of mainly a single block of vines on the west side of Château Lafite, on the Milon hillside, consisting of gravel mixed with aeolian sand on limestone subsoil. The 76 hectares of vines are planted to 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. Each plot of vines is fermented separately to judge its quality and determine whether or not it is to be included in the Grand Vin. Each vintage is aged in oak barrels that are made at the domain's cooperage. The wines are wonderfully concentrated with excellent depth of flavor and aging potential.

The 2020 Château Duhart-Milon is a much more concentrated, serious wine. Based on 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot hitting 12.5% natural alcohol, with a pH of 3.91, its deep ruby/plum color is followed by medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker currants, cherries, damp earth, ripe tobacco, and graphite. Beautifully balanced, elegant, and straight-up seamless, it shows the classic, focused style of the vintage and will be a modern day classic from this terroir.

A firm and racy Duhart with currants, chocolate and walnuts. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely subtle fruit. A bright finish. Succulent and refined. Savory. Very, very fine. 72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot. Drink or hold.

This ripe wine has some serious tannins and rich black fruits. Behind the structure, a swath of black fruits gives the wine concentration and ripeness. Drink this textured wine from 2027.

The 2020 Duhart-Milon has a classy, well-defined bouquet, with brambly red fruit, pencil box and scents of autumn leaves, gradually gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with rather dry tannins that render this quite serious at the moment. It has good substance but is missing a bit of brightness and charm at the moment. Even so, I would contentedly cellar this for three or four years because there is potential. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
