Born in Berkeley, California, Massimo Di Costanzo is a proud Napa Valley winemaker with a global point of view. Massimo found winemaking while at UC Davis and knew he had found his calling. After graduating with a degree in Viticulture and Enology, Massimo combined stints making wine in Tuscany, Mendoza, Stellenbosch, with longer tenures honing his craft at esteemed Napa wineries: Ovid, Screaming Eagle, and Philippe Melka Consulting. By 2009, he knew that to make the kind of expressive, balanced wines he loved, he would need to start his own project. A friendship with the Farella Vineyard turned into a fruitful partnership, and in 2010 he launched the debut vintage, Di Costanzo Farella Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Massimo lives in Saint Helena, California with his wife, Erin, and son, Luciano.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon exclusively from the Farella Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA, located in the southeastern corner of Napa Valley on soils of red, gravelly loam on a base of volcanic ash. Because of its proximity to San Francisco Bay, the Farella Vineyard benefits from the cool breezes that come off the water, ensuring freshness and plenty of lively acidity in the grapes. Fermentation takes place in small stainless vats and elevage in a mixture of new and old French Oak barriques for 22 months prior to bottling, without fining or filtration and minimal sulfur. Deep purple in the glass with soaring aromas of cassis, ripe blackberry, purple flowers, lead pencil, leather and spice: classic, complex Cabernet aromas with an unmistakable Napa footprint. The palate is full-bodied but charged with a chiseled acidity and fresh fruit flavors all of which are framed by firm, mouth-coating tannins. Restrained, elegant and transparent, this is old-school, Napa Cab, proudly showing its terroir. Only 370 cases produced.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is a powerhouse. A wine of gravitas and muscle, the 2018 is endowed with serious intensity from start to finish. Wild cherry, plum, gravel, incense, dried herbs, gravel and mocha infuse the 2018 with tremendous character as well as nuance.

Powerfully broad-shouldered, this wine is soft and supple on the palate, with a fleshy quality that appeals. Earthy clove, cedar and pencil shavings provide a savory context against which elements of red and black currant, cassis and oak get to play. The structure of this wine will support cellaring; enjoy best from 2025 through 2028.
