Bodegas Sierra Norte is a family estate with 322 hectares of vines in Camporrobles, Calderón, La Roda, Carcelén, Jumilla and El Pinós planted to traditional Spanish varietals. The estate was founded in 1914 in Camporrobles, Valencia by the Olmo family with an 8,000 square meter plot of land which they planted with Bobal, the first in the region to do so. Over the years, the vineyard area expanded and new varietals were planted, including Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Macabeo, though the grapes were always sold to other wineries. In 1985, the family eliminated the use of conventional sprays and began to farm organically. In 1999, Manuel Olmo, the third generation to lead the property, decided to make his own estate wines, and Bodegas Sierra Norte was born; the next year, 2000, all their of their vineyards were certified organic. Today, their wines represent exceptional quality at an amazing value.
Bodegas Sierra Norte's Mariluna is a fresh, lively, yet easy-going Mediterranean wine made with 85% Verdejo and 15% Macabeo on limestone rich soils at 900 meters altitude in Campo La Estrecha y Pozo Viejo, Valencia. The grapes are cold soaked and gently pressed before undergoing a cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, after which they are aged on the lees for two months with regular lees stirring. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant lemon color with a water-white rim. Aromas of white flowers, citrus and apricot are complemented by a vibrant mineral tone and notes of fresh cut green herbs. The palate features loads of refreshing acidity balanced by a creamy mouthfeel from lees contact which balances with the energetic fruit intensity. Mariluna is laid back and easy, perfect to enjoy with light starters, white fish, seafood, fresh cheeses and salads, though it is just as enjoyable on its own with good company. Organic and vegan!
