Maison Tardieu-Laurent was founded in 1996 by Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, though for many years the business has been the exclusive domaine of the Tardieu family. Today, it is run by Michel, his son, Bastien, and daughter, Camille. When Michel started the business, he would ask the growers he worked with two questions: in their appellation, which producers' wines did they enjoy drinking and if they had some friends or producers with well-located, old vines who might be interested to work with him. The result is an extensive network of “partner vignerons” — farmers with whom the family have long-standing relationships, almost all of whom have enviable holdings of old vines in the northern and southern Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. Today, this word of mouth and handshake model is still how the family conducts their business.

Tardieu-Laurent's Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah from 40+ year old vines in Pied-Gü, Les Teyssonnières, La Bouïssière, Les Dentelles and Le Cayron. The wine is fermented 50% whole cluster, then aged for 10 months in old barrels followed by 10 months in foudre and bottled without fining or filtration. This Gigondas pours an enticing mid-purple color offering aromas of pure purple and black fruit accented with a savory brushland bouquet: garrigue and herbs. A dense and powerful attack gives way to an energetic palate of juicy fruit flavors (plum and blackberry purée) that are balanced by supple tannins and mouthwatering concentration that flow to a long, graceful finish. An excellent pairing for heartier fare... Try with any stews or braises, as well as roasted red meats and game.

This old-vine Gigondas tantalizes the nose with heady aromas of red cherries and rosehip, which are elegantly framed by a touch of clove. The palate is rich and wound with plenty of energy in the midpalate that presents concentrated red cherries, strawberries, cassis, violets and green peppercorn. Generous and textured with persistent tannins that should integrate seamlessly after cellaring well through 2030+.

A showstopper, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes plays with the top wines in the vintage, offering a brilliant array of red and blue fruits, flowers, incense, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with fine tannins and a great, great finish, it's going to evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. If you see a bottle, don't miss it!

A racy red, with baked plum, sappy cassis and wet earth and vanilla-tinged incense notes that slowly emerge. The round palate is nicely offset by a savory vein of crushed iron and smoke, with grippy tannins firming up the structured, densely packed yet elegant finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Drink now through 2028. 550 cases made, 175 cases imported.

The classy 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes blends 90% of Grenache, with the remainder equally split between Mourveclre and Syrah. Aging took place for ten months in new and second-fill French oak barriques, followed by another year in foudres. Swirling the glass unlocks crushed rose petals, strawberry jam and cedar. Spicy and minty subtleties add more aromatic layers. Medium to full-bodied and framed by a smooth tannic structure, this 2020 red has enough substance to benefit from a few years in bottle.
