Andreas von Canal, grandson of the last Baron von Heddesdorff, has run the Freiherr von Heddesdorff estate since 1984. The family has grown Riesling on the steep, terraced slopes of Winningen for nearly six centuries. In addition to holding two hectares of vines in the Uhlen vineyard — one of Germany's steepest — Heddesdorff farms small parcels in the Brückstück, Röttgen, and Domgarten vineyards. The wines are vinified in tank with indigenous yeasts to preserve the pure, slate-tinged fruit and zinging acidity inherent to wines from these incredible vineyard sites. In 2014, after training as a winemaker, working various internships and completing her viticultural studies in Geisenheim, Andreas' daughter, Katharina, began working at the estate.
On a German wine label, Trocken means dry, and the Heddesdorff Riesling Trocken is a fresh, mineral-driven dry Riesling that delivers wave after wave of wonderful lime, slate and Granny Smith apple flavors framed by a refreshing acidity. Wonderful to drink on its own, though this Riesling will pair well with pork chops served alongside sautéed apples and onions.
