The Mercouri Estate is located in the western Peloponnese on the plateau of the Ichthis peninsula. Founded in 1864 by Theodoros Mercouri, the estate has an over 150 year history of wine production and is still owned by the Mercouri family. The estate is well-known as the Greek home of Refosco, a varietal from Northern Italy which Theodorus planted when he established the vineyards. In addition to Refosco, the 40 acres of vineyards are also planted to 15 other varietals of Greek and French origin.
The Domaine Mercouri Red is a blend of 85% Refosco and 15% Mavrodaphne grapes. The wine spends 10-12 months of maturation in French oak barrels, then rests in the bottle for at least another six months. It possesses a deep red color and a bouquet of red fruits accented with notes of mocha, vanilla and cinnamon — a subtle influence of the oak. This red is medium-bodied and well-structured with full, yet fine tannins. Enjoy with roasted red and white meats, casseroles with tomato sauce and with hard cheeses.
