It's been many years since I first met Fabrice Larochette, even though it feels like we've been friends for a lifetime. After chatting with him for fifteen minutes at our first meeting, I knew that I had a found a kindred spirit, whose love of wine — and Rugby — were as strong as mine. That first meeting was the start of a fantastic relationship, and Fabrice's wines have been staples of our white Burgundy selection ever since. He refuses to use any oak, believing the barrels take away from the pure essence of the Chardonnay grape. His wines are some of the best values on the market today and an easy choice for my house Burgundy! The Larochette family has been in the wine business for four generations. Fabrice uses their 10+ hectares of land to produce white Burgundies exclusively. It is his true passion in life, and I have met few winemakers more devoted to the cause of terroir-driven wines, something that is crystal clear every time I pull a cork and take a sip.
I have been working with Domaine Larochette ever since my first tasting with Fabrice all those years ago, and each and every vintage he crafts stunning wines that accurately reflect their terroir. La Grande Bruyère — his Mâcon-Fuissé — is a crisp, clean and pure representation of Chardonnay grown in this part of southern Burgundy. In the glass, the wine shimmers a brilliant gold color with wonderful aromas of Asian pear, Honeycrisp apple, white flowers and bergamot. The palate is textured, fresh and balanced with a striking interplay of ripe fruit concentration and wet stone minerality that effortlessly lead into a long finish, displaying depth, persistence and refreshment. Fabrice's mastery of Chardonnay comes shining through in this truly exquisite wine. Pair with scallop risotto, grilled swordfish, lemon caper chicken or a salad of mixed greens and roasted vegetables; this gorgeous white Burgundy is a delightful addition to any dinner table.
