Castel Sallegg is an iconic property nestled among the Dolomite Alps in the area surrounding Lake Caldaro (Kaltern) in Alto-Adige (Südtirol). In 1851, the castle and surrounding land was purchased by Archduke Rainer of Austria, Viceroy of Lombardy and Veneto, and later inherited by the noble von Kuenburg family. Today, Count Georg von Kuenburg, along with enologist Matthias Hauser, ensure that quality and tradition continues at this venerable estate, which consists of three vineyards — Preyhof, Leisenhof and Seehof — on the western slopes overlooking the lake. Each vineyard has a different altitude, slope and soil composition that is perfectly matched to their ideal grape varietals. The estate takes their role as an historical, and more importantly, environmental steward seriously; they are converting to sustainability by changing to lightweight glass bottles and green packaging, eliminating the use of herbicides and adopting eco-friendly practices in the vineyard and cellar. Castel Sallegg is without question one of Alto Adige’s premier producers, crafting stunning wines grown in the unique microclimate of Lake Caldaro.
Castel Sallegg's 100% Pinot Grigio is grown at 350 meters altitude on the deep, sandy and loamy soils with limestone gravel above Lake Caldaro. The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and kept on the lees for 4 months with a small portion (5%) fermented and aged in oak barrels. In the glass the wine displays a light, brilliant straw-yellow color with green highlights strewn throughout. Beautiful aromas of apricots, yellow plums, Bartlett pears and a delicate, flinty mineral note plume from the glass. The palate is full and richly textured balanced by incredible freshness with added flavors of Honeycrisp apples and key lime. The finish is zesty and mineral with a wonderful concentration of fruit alongside notes of honeycomb and wet stones. Enjoy with various seafood and vegetable dishes, hearty salads and assorted antipasti.
