The wine’s namesake is the French Admiral Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the second owner of Château Beychevelle. The Admiral was so revered that ships would lower their sails as they passed his estate as a gesture of respect. Thus, the origin of the Château’s name, Beychevelle, which is derived from the Gascogne phrase "Bêcha vêla" or "baisse voile" (lower the sails). The nautical theme is continued with the famous emblem of the Château: a ship with a griffon-shaped prow.
The Amiral de Beychevelle is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot, made with the same strict attention to detail as the Grand Vin, but more approachable in its youth. In the glass, the wine sits a striking, deep ruby color with purple highlights. Amiral de Beychevelle is wonderfully aromatic, resplendent with notes of red cassis, blackberries and spice. On the palate, the wine is pure and vibrant with astonishing freshness and refinement to complement the soft and voluptuous texture. This is ready to drink now, though will age gracefully for another 10 years.
