Wine has been made at Montecalvi in Greve in Chianti since the 1400's. It became an independent estate in the 1980's and is now owned by the Drake family, who also own Collalto (which means high hills in Italian) in the Adelaide Hills region of Australia. Recently, the family has focused its attention on restoring their old four-hectare plot of vineyards (which contain some of the oldest vines in Tuscany — many planted in 1932) and replanting the vines that cannot be salvaged with indigenous Italian varietals. Montecalvi is certified organic, aiming to craft wines (and olive oil) that are the best reflection of their specific terroir in this beautiful part of Tuscany.
Montecalvi Chianti Classico is made from Sangiovese blended with small amounts of Canaiolo and Canina Nera, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 18 months in French oak tonneaux and six months in bottle. In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant mid-ruby color. Enchanting aromas of sour cherry, fresh red plums and a savory, herbal undertone perfume the senses. The palate explodes with incredible freshness and finely-etched tannins that lend energy to the bright fruit flavors that flow into an exciting finish. This is an elegant and refined Chianti, tightly wound and bursting with flavor, though balanced by an appealing roundness and surprisingly soft texture. Enjoy with a bone-in ribeye served alongside a plate of roasted and caramelized vegetables.
