In 2014, Sylvie purchased Château Chauvin along with her children, Julie, Pierre and François. The Château is located in the north-west part of St. Émilion, near the border with Pomerol and neighbors with Châteaux Cheval Blanc, Figeac and La Dominique. The vineyards are in a single block, planted to 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon on sandy-clay soils with an iron-rich subsoil. Prior to Sylvie and her children, the Ondet family owned the property for over 100 years. Upon taking over the property, Sylvie and her team look to continue the work of the Ondet family, while giving the Château the tools to succeed and improve in the vineyards and the cellar.
The Château Chauvin is a blend of 77% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It pours a deep ruby in color emitting intense aromas of cassis, blackberry, vanilla and baking spice explode from the glass. Super-concentrated, yet seamless, on the palate, this wine possesses fruit flavors that blossom and seem to never stop growing, leading to an endless finish. Impeccably balanced and supremely well-composed, this is an outstanding Saint-Émilion from what is becoming an outstanding vintage. Pairings are seemingly endless... Rosemary and thyme-crusted lamb chops, duck confit, oyster mushroom risotto, BBQ-slathered baby back ribs...

The 2020 Château Chauvin offers up a vivid purple hue as well as a meaty, powerful nose of ripe black cherries, roasted herbs, jus de viande, graphite, and a terrific sense of minerality. Showing more floral nuances with time in the glass, it's medium to full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, the building tannins of the vintage, and outstanding length. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

Chocolate, bay leaves, oregano and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, with firm yet nicely ripe and polished tannins. Broad and seamless. Caressing and velvety at the end. Try from 2026.

Barrel Sample. The wine has richness that imbues the tannins with generosity. The juicy berry flavors and acidity are already succulent. It is the core of dryness that promises the aging.

The 2020 Chauvin has a clean and precise bouquet with dark berry fruit, cedar and crushed stone, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, again, as it showed from barrel, overtly peppery in style but not excessively so. Fine delineation on the saline Valrona chocolate-tinged finish, this is a very capable Saint Émilion Grand Cru.
