The secret to the wines of Dupuy de Lôme is the location of their vineyards. In Bandol, most vineyards face south in order to absorb as much sunshine as possible to fully ripen the Mourvèdre grape, the noble variety of the region. However, the vineyards of Domaine Dupuy de Lôme face north. Facing north, the vines receive less intense sunlight and enjoy a cooler microclimate, which allows for retention of acidity and slower sugar accumulation in the Mourvèdre grapes. As a result, the wines are lighter, fresher and more elegant than those from south-facing vineyards. Furthermore, the domaine's vineyards are totally isolated, so the biodynamic farming of Laurence isn't compromised by a neighbor's use of pesticides or herbicides. The vineyards are pristine, and the quality of the domaine's exceptional fruit comes across perfectly in the quality of their wines.
Domaine Dupuy de Lôme's Bandol rouge is a blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. The wine pours a deep purple in the glass and is intensely aromatic. A couple of swirls releases a gorgeous bouquet of dark berries accented with notes of violets and forest floor. The palate is generous and full with ripe dark fruit flavors of blackberry and ripe plum highlighted by a wonderful minerality that carries the wine to a long, smooth finish. This is the ideal pairing for any grilled beef or lamb dishes... Try it with steak frites or Provençal-style leg of lamb.
