Château de Villeneuve is located in Souzay-Champigny, its vineyards in the shadow of the steeple of a 15th century church. The Villeneuve family had owned the vineyards since the late 16th century, however it wasn't until a member of the family died at the Battle of Yorktown under Lafayette's command in the American Revolutionary War that estate renamed itself. Today, Jean-Pierre Chevalier runs the estate along organic principles, producing some of the most outstanding Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs in the Saumur region.
The Saumur-Champigny Rouge is made from 100% Cabernet Franc from vines 35-40 years old grown in clay-limestone soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and concrete and aged in a mix of large oak barrels, cement and steel. In the glass, the wine shows a vivid ruby color with purple highlights. The nose is intoxicating with pristine aromas of red berries, capsicum, tomato leaf and earth. The palate is energetic with a stony minerality to compliment the complex mix of fruit flavors alongside medium-fine grain tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is invigorating, leaving you reaching for the glass after each sip. Enjoy with grilled sausages, stuffed peppers or roasted pork.
