Robert (Bob) Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, after graduating from UC Davis with degrees in both Viticulture and Enology. He spent his first year working for Heitz Cellars, followed by 15 years as the founding winemaker for Markham Vineyards. In 1992, Bob began another 15 years as the founding winemaker for Pride Mountain Vineyards. During this period, he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, and School House wines. He now focuses mostly on Robert Foley Vineyards wines, but also creates the offerings from Shelter, Padis Vineyards, Engel Family, Herson Family Vineyards, and JennaMarise in the Napa Valley. In 1998, Robert Foley Vineyards bottled its flagship Claret and has since expanded and diversified its production to offer more of the big reds for which Bob is famous.
The Napa Valley Cabernet combines the character of the four AVAs where he farms his Cabernet Sauvignon: Weathered high-elevation vineyards on Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, and Mt Veeder provide intensity of color, higher acidity levels and spiciness from the surrounding forests while the lower elevation blocks of southern and northern Calistoga with rocky soils and more extreme heat summation provide then lush mid-palate and fine tannin. Fully ripe black cherry and black currant aromas are nuanced with suggestions of cedar and camphor. The palate is full and even with a rich middle that is perfectly balanced by natural grape acidity and silky fine tannin.

Beautiful cassis, graphite, dark chocolate, and floral hints emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is medium to full-bodied and has great tannins as well as a balanced, classical style. A terrific 2017 that shines on all accounts, it should keep for 10-15 years.
