Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, dating back to the 1700's when it was founded by Jean Demay de Certan. Historically the wines were sold under the name of Sertan, and for many years enjoyed a reputation as one of the top estates in Pomerol. In 1924 Georges Thienpont bought the historic property and today it is still in the family's hands, run by Alexandre Thienpont, Georges' grandson. It is rightly considered to be one of the top estates in Pomerol, producing stunning wines year in and year out.
The vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot (in clay soils), 25% Cabernet Franc (in gravel-clay soils) and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (in gravel soils) located in the heart of Pomerol, on the central plateau, surrounded by other famous estates. The Château's second label, La Gravette de Certan, is produced from young vines and is more approachable in its youth, while faithfully mirroring the pedigree of the Grand Vin.
